What is Structured Workplace Learning?

Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) is on-the-job training during which a student is expected to master a unique set of skills related to a course. SWL is undertaken as part of the Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major (VCE VM) or a Vocational Education and Training Delivered to Secondary Students (VETDSS). SWL is far more hands-on and extensive than year 10 work experience and better prepares students for the workplace.

How we help?

Supporting students and teachers

Through our partnership network and relationships with neighbouring LLEN's, we assist local schools by providing suitable SWL placements for their students. We are also able to lend personalised support; seeking out placements for students with additional needs or industry areas that are in high demand.

Our support goes beyond just finding the SWL placement. To ensure the most successful outcomes for everyone involved and build long lasting relationships between schools and employers, we offer World of Work workshops to help arm students with the tools they need for the workforce and conduct a follow up session with the host employer at the end of the students’ placement.

Additionally we train teachers in how to use the SWL portal to find the best opportunities for their students. At mmvllen we proudly 'walk the talk' and are ourselves a SWL host employer for students in the Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley area.

The SWL portal - for students, teachers and employers

The Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) portal opens up opportunities for school students to find work placements with employers all across Victoria. Explore the SWL portal and reveal top quality work placements in the Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley area. If you're a teacher that requires access to the portal, simply complete the access request form and we'll guide you through the next steps.

What host employers say

My first student gained an apprenticeship as a result of his SWL placement. This positive outcome, along with the demands of a growing small business, has led us to hosting multiple students over the years. To be able to give a young person a head start is so rewarding for me.

I like to give young people the opportunity, if they show initiative and work well, it can result in them getting a position like it did for one of our hard-working students”
